I’m a student at another university or college outside of UVA. How do I apply to the College of Arts and Sciences?

UVA welcomes hundreds of transfer students every year! Please visit the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to learn more about the University of Virginia and the admissions process for transfer students.

I’m a UVA student in another school. How do I transfer to the College of Arts and Sciences?

Every semester, many UVA students decide to transfer into the College of Arts and Sciences from other UVA schools through "Intra-university Transfer". Find out about eligibility criteria, College requirements, the intra-university transfer application process and deadlines below.

Am I eligible to transfer to the College of Arts and Sciences?

You should apply for transfer into the College in your first or second year. It is rare for a third year student to apply successfully to the College because of strictly enforced policies. These include:

  • College students must complete over 30 credits to fulfill their "general education" requirements.
  • College students must declare or defer their major by the end of their 4th semester.
  • College students must earn 120 credits, at least 108 of which must be from courses that count as "inside the College".
  • College students are generally limited to a total of 8 full-time semesters and 2 part-time semesters. Semesters completed in other schools count toward this total.

If you are a third year student, please consult with the Academic Advising Dean who assists with Intra-university Transfers, Dean Erin Eaker, to assess your eligibility. The College will not accept applications after a student has completed more than 6 full-time semesters at UVA or elsewhere.

If you were admitted to another UVA school but haven't started your first semester at UVA, you must contact UVA's Office of Admissions to request a transfer to the College of Arts and Sciences. The process described here is only for students who have already matriculated at UVA.

What are the criteria for being admitted to the College of Arts and Sciences as an intra-university transfer student?

In order to be admitted to the College from another UVA school, you must satisfy all of the College's criteria for Good Standing:

  • Your semester GPA must be at least 1.8.
  • You must pass at least 12 graded credits.
  • You may not have more than one grade below a C-.

You must also have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 and you should have earned the minimum number of College credit hours required:

  • 24 credit hours prior to the 3rd semester
  • 54 credit hours prior to the 5th semester
  • 84 credit hours prior to the 7th semester

You must also have a viable plan to complete your degree requirements, including general education requirements and major requirements, within the semesters remaining to you.

Intra-university application process for students who started at UVA as first year students

The application portal is open from November 15 through December 15 for transfer for the upcoming spring semester and May 1 through June 1 for transfer for the upcoming fall semester. Applications are not accepted outside of these dates.

You will apply to the College through UVA's internal transfer application portal You will need to upload a pdf copy of IUT Worksheet B, so please complete it before you start your application.

If you are applying for transfer to the College in your fourth semester or later, you must also declare a major in the College at the time of application. The Declaration of Major Form must be filled out and submitted through DocuSign. Please visit the relevant department's website to learn more about how to declare your major.

Please contact Dean Erin Eaker with any questions about the transfer process.

When will I be notified about the status of my intra-university transfer application?

Applications are evaluated at the end of the semester after semester grades are posted. If there are any issues with your application or eligibility for transfer, the College Intra-university Transfer Dean will reach out to you. Otherwise you will hear from the College Registrar when your transfer is complete. This is generally about 3 weeks after the last day of the application window.

I am currently a student in the College of Arts and Sciences and I am interested in transferring to another UVA school.

Please contact the advising office of the school you are interested in for advice about transferring.

Keep in mind that while you are enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences, you should continue to make progress on your College requirements. For example, as a first year student in the College, you are required to take two EGMT classes in your first semester and two EGMT classes in your second semester, regardless of your intention to transfer to another school.

I transferred from the College into another UVA school and I want to return.

Students who have been accepted for transfer from the College to another school at the University but wish to reverse the process and return to the College, may do so before the beginning of the new semester. Once the semester starts, they remain enrolled as students in the other school and must apply as an Intra-University transfer student. A student who completes one or more semesters in another school of the University and then wishes to return to the College must also apply as an Intra-University transfer student.
