Learn To Use SIS and Plan Your Schedule

Take some time to log into your Student Center in SIS and learn the Student Information System

  • Plan your schedule using "Class Search" in SIS and add 15-20 College Classes to your shopping cart before you attend Summer Orientation.
  • Choose primarily 1000- or 2000-level courses.
  • You may add closed or waitlisted classes to your shopping cart — there may be seats available during your course enrollment sessions.
  • Consider a USEM course: University Seminars are two-credit courses that are offered during both the fall and spring semesters. Student participation in a USEM should foster a love of learning with the goal of sparking enthusiasm for a particular subject.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Students in the College must complete 108 credits in Arts & Sciences in total to graduate. For students with no College-equivalent transfer credit, this means that no more than 12 credits over four years may come from UVA’s other undergraduate schools. We recommend that you take all of your classes in A&S for the first few years — unless you are planning to apply to transfer to another undergraduate school at UVA or are planning to apply for the B.A. in Computer Science major. Even then, we recommend only one per semester so you do not fail to meet the 108-credit requirement.

Be Prepared for Summer Advising and Enrollment

Your first opportunity for summer advising is an optional virtual advising session with a group of other incoming first-year students and an advisor. Keep an eye out for an email with information on advising session times and opportunities to sign up. These advising sessions will help you as you complete your pre-enrollment survey.

Your second opportunity for summer advising comes on Day 1 of Summer Orientation. You will be assigned a room with an advisor and a group of other incoming first-year students. In this meeting, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and fill your Shopping Cart with classes in preparation for your enrollment window on Day 2.

You must bring a laptop, tablet or smartphone to use on Day 2 of Summer Orientation, which is when you will enroll in your fall classes. (A laptop will be much easier to use than a phone.) Bringing a device to your advising workshop on Day 1 is also highly recommended.

You will be assigned an enrollment appointment on Day 2 which will give you access to enroll in classes using SIS: the Student Information System. There will be trained faculty, staff and orientation leaders on site to help you navigate this platform and assist you with academic information and advice about Fall enrollment. You will be able to add courses, as well as swap any pre-enrolled courses. All enrollment appointments on Day 2 of Summer Orientation are randomly assigned and cannot be changed for any reason. Seats in high-demand classes are reserved for each session, so no session is better than any other.
