Stephen Caviness

I bring a relational, whole-person approach to advising. This means that I support my advisees both academically and beyond the classroom. I work with students one-on-one to craft academic pursuits where they will thrive, and I help them to develop a sense of belonging here on grounds. As a pre-major advisor, my role is focused on supporting first- and second-year students as they transition to UVA and launch into their chosen major. I draw on my experiences as a former middle school math teacher and cross-country coach to relate to where students are transitioning from. Similarly, my expertise in mathematics education informs my ongoing research and my teaching in the Engagements courses.
