Headshot of Sarena Tien

As a first-generation, low-income graduate, my success stems from my support system of faculty, staff, and students. I carry their compassion into my advising work by creating safe, welcoming, and encouraging spaces both inside and outside the classroom. Within these spaces, I empower students to achieve their academic goals: we work together to identify strengths, explore possibilities, and navigate resources and challenges. Prior to UVA, I earned my PhD in French Literature from Cornell with a graduate minor in Feminist, Gender, & Sexuality Studies. Focusing on Francophone African and Asian film and literature, I explored female friendship as a unifying force for social justice and positive change. This idea of community and hope reflects my desire to foster care and belonging amongst students. I also worked at the Office of Academic Diversity Initiatives, where I supported underrepresented and underserved students in the McNair Scholars Program and learned that I wanted to continue offering academic, career, and personal guidance to undergraduates.
