I believe that empowering students to identify and cultivate their passions and strengths is the key to engaged and conscientious learning. Part of what makes the first years of the college experience an exciting time is the chance to explore disciplines, worldviews and topics totally new to a student. This liberal arts approach of broad learning is not only the goal of the college curriculum of UVA, but served as my own model in college. My role as an advisor is to help my advisees navigate these options, reflect on their experiences and help them discern their way forward as they select a major to develop deep understanding of their chosen field.

I come to UVA with a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Iowa, where I also received and M.A. in Religious Studies in Classics, an MTS from Vanderbilt University and a B.A. from Coe College in Religious Studies and Mathematics. Part of my research interest is ancient educational models, a topic I explore with my students in my Engagements course, “How to Learn through History.” When I am not teaching or advising, you may find me in local game stores, running TTRPGs online and in person or keeping up with the latest Star Wars releases.
