Headshot of John Piller

When advising students, I build trust by learning about their backgrounds, exploring their interests and passions, and understanding their academic aspirations. I encourage them to embrace challenges that push their comfort zones, consider the impact they want to have on the world, and take full advantage of the opportunities offered by UVA and the local community. My commitment is to ensure students feel supported in every aspect of their lives so they can thrive as they grow into adulthood. With my knowledge of UVA and my dedication to the Liberal Arts, I can provide students with resources to explore classes and programs they may not be aware of. Drawing from my background as a poet and yoga/meditation teacher, I provide students with fresh perspectives on their experiences and offer techniques and strategies to foster resilience and self-care, enabling them to achieve their academic goals. Prior to becoming a College Advising Fellow, I taught creative writing and composition at the University of Virginia and the University of Richmond. Most recently, I advised student leaders at Madison House, the volunteer center at UVA.
