One of my goals as an advisor is to make college less confusing. There are many things in life that are perplexing or mysterious and which we may never fully understand. Which biology class to take, how to declare a major and the purpose of UVA’s general education requirements should not be among these things. Getting clear on these understandable things creates more room for deeper learning and exploration.
I believe a great liberal arts education is all about discovery, and I approach advising with this principle in mind. A liberal arts degree asks students to do more than master a body of knowledge or become proficient in certain skills. It also asks students to stay open to being surprised—by the world around them and by where their journey is leading. It’s a privilege to accompany students as they encounter the challenges and excitements of college learning, and in the process discover something about who they are.
I have been connected to the UVA community for the past ten years. I have also taught religious studies and advised undergraduate students at Carleton College in my home state of Minnesota. I enjoy getting to know many of my advisees in my Engagements classes, which focus on the topics of awe, play and images.
