Paola Monteros-Freeman

Rooted in the values of a liberal arts education, my approach to advising emphasizes the development of critical and analytical thinking that crosses disciplinary boundaries and enriches students’ lives beyond the classroom. While advising includes helping students navigate course requirements and academic planning, it also involves guiding them to see connections across their learning and reflect more deeply on their intellectual journey.

My own path as a first-generation, non-traditional and minority student deeply informs how I approach this work. I understand firsthand the transformative impact that thoughtful, accessible advising can have and the importance of creating space for students to feel seen, supported and empowered. That perspective continues to shape my commitment to helping students navigate not just academic requirements, but the broader journey of finding meaning and purpose in their education.

In my teaching and research, I focused in Spanish and Latin American literature and film. I hold a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature from UVA, a Master’s in Foreign Languages, Cultures and Literatures from Virginia Tech, a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Mercy College (NYC) and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Communications from San Miguel Institute (Argentina).
