Defer Declaring a Major - Form and Instructions

To start the deferral process, visit the Declaration of Major & Minor Contacts page and find the department you would like to defer declaring a major in. Email the person listed to ask what steps you need to follow to defer declaring a major.

You will need to know who your Advising Dean is to complete this form. If you are unsure of who your Advising Dean is, please visit the UVA eAdvising portal and click on the Advising tab to the left. Your Advising Dean should be listed at the top of the page.

Students who cannot declare their first major by the beginning of their fifth semester may use this form to defer their declaration for ONE semester only. No student is permitted to enroll for a sixth full-time semester without having declared a major.

The deadline to submit a deferral for Fall 2024 has passed. Deferrals that are not fully approved by Wednesday, October 9th will not be processed.

New deferrals are currently only being accepted for students who will be in their fifth semester in Spring 2025. No other semesters are currently eligible for deferral.
